Krystal works primarily as a community doula. She works as an independent contractor and has the support of Rock County Public Health to help African American/Black & Brown birthing people in Rock County.

Available evidence suggests doula services may be an important component of an effort to address birth inequities. A 2013 study of socially disadvantaged mothers at risk for adverse birth outcomes, Impact of Doulas on Healthy Birth Outcomes, (Gruber KJ,Cupito SH, Dobson CF, 2013), found that doula-assisted mothers were four times less likely to have a low birth weight baby, two times less likely to experience a birth complication involving themselves or their baby, and significantly more likely to initiate breastfeeding. Doula Services Within a Healthy Start Program: Increasing Access for an Underserved Population, (Thomas, MP., Ammann, G., Brazier, E. et al., 2017) found that women enrolled in the program with doula support had lower rates of preterm birth and low birthweight babies.
